Defending Vanier Cup champs will kickoff 2016 season at Thunderbird Stadium

VANCOUVER – For the first time in nearly two decades the road to the Vanier Cup will travel through Thunderbird Stadium. The Canada West football schedule was released Wednesday morning complete with all the key dates for Thunderbird fans. The defending Hardy and Vanier Cup champion UBC Thunderbirds enter the season looking to become the first Canada West team to repeat as national champions since the 1969-1970 Manitoba Bisons. "Every year the schedule will represent some challenges for all the teams," says UBC head coach Blake Nill. "You must prepare your team fully each and every week to be successful. Our league is just that competitive." The T-Birds open the season at Thunderbird Stadium against the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday, September 3rd. Friday, September 9th UBC will travel to McMahon Stadium in Calgary to face their bitter rivals the Dinos. This game will serve as a heated rematch of last year's historical Hardy Cup victory for UBC. The 'Blue and Gold' will then host the Dinos in Point Grey to cap the regular season off on October 29th. UBC fans need to mark Saturday, September 17th on their calendars for "Homecoming". The day's festivities will culminate with UBC squaring of against the Regina Rams at Thunderbird Stadium The regular season schedule concludes Saturday, October 29 before the Hardy Cup semis on Saturday, November 5 and finally the 80th edition of the Hardy Cup a week later on Saturday, November 12. In addition to the Hardy Cup, Canada West is the proud host of the 2016 Mitchell Bowl, as the Hardy Cup champion will welcome the Atlantic University Sport champion in the CIS national semifinal game, with a spot in the 52nd Vanier Cup in Hamilton, Ont.
